A standard vented gas heater is 67% efficient.  Even when not at home, it will reheat the water 3 or 4 times a day, adding to cost.  A tankless unit only runs when hot water is needed.  Efficiency?  Tankless skyrockets to 97%, and provides unlimited hot water on demand.  No one takes a cold shower because someone else (or the dishwasher) used up the hot water.   Other tankless advantages include a 10-15 year warranty instead of six.
