Power Outage Options

When power goes out, what are the options?

Option 1

Wait it out, not knowing how long it will last. Problems include no refrigeration, lights, and TV. Or a flooded basement or crawl space due to a dead sump pump. If your water comes from a well, no shower or toilet. Double trouble if your sewer system requires power. For those depending on electricity for medical needs, one’s life may depend on it. Option 1 is the least favorable choice.

Option 2

Portable generators can be a stop gap.  For safety and proper operation, the initial installation requires an electrician. Once connected, you can operate it, but with complications. After placing the generator a safe distance from the house, you will need to start it, replenish it with gasoline or propane, and protect it from the weather. And throw a few levers. You also must guess when the utility restores power so the unit can be turned off and stored for the next time.

Option 3

Standby generators offer automatic start up within seconds of the outage. When the utility restores power, today’s models transfer seamlessly.  How does a standby generator perform during the outage? When the unit is matched to your electrical demands, those in the home will notice no difference. Your TV, furnace, air conditioner, dishwasher, washer and dryer will operate as always. Like portable models, they do require periodic maintenance, usually every two years, depending on model.

If a standby generator sounds appealing, Mechanical Extremes can help. In this video, Harold Wilkes explains how they work.
