Your air conditioner keeps the first floor exactly the way you want it. But walk upstairs to the bedroom and it’s a different story. Instead of cool comfort, you’re greeted by an oven.
So you turn the thermostat down another degree or two.
The result? The downstairs becomes a meat locker while the upstairs is still too warm.
Are there any easy solutions?

Start with the furnace filter. A dirty filter restricts airflow, making it harder for your air conditioner to deliver cool air throughout the house. Replacing the filter is inexpensive and can sometimes make a noticeable difference.
Next, think about the physics of your home. During the day, keep blinds or shades closed in upstairs rooms to reduce heat from the sun.
Another tip is to adjust your supply vents. Open the upstairs vents fully while partially closing some of the downstairs vents. This can encourage more cool air to reach the second floor. Just don’t close too many vents, as modern HVAC systems are designed to operate with adequate airflow.
Sometimes these simple adjustments solve the problem. Other times, the solution may involve balancing the ductwork, adding return air, improving insulation, or upgrading equipment.
