Furnace Fan and Your Comfort

A simple thermostat setting can make a noticeable difference in how comfortable your home feels—your fan setting.

Most homeowners leave the fan set to “Auto.” In this mode, the fan only runs when your furnace or air conditioner is actively heating or cooling. While that works, it can lead to noticeable temperature swings.  Rooms warm up or cool down quickly, then gradually drift until the system kicks on again.

Switching the fan to “On” changes the game.

When the fan runs continuously, air is constantly circulating throughout your home. That means more even temperatures from room to room, fewer hot and cold spots, and a more consistent, comfortable feel overall.  This applies to both heating and cooling seasons.

Is this right for your system?  Not every system is designed the same.

If your furnace has a modern DC (variable-speed) motor, running the fan continuously is typically no problem and very efficient.  If your system uses an older AC motor, continuous operation may lead to extra wear and higher energy use.   That’s why it’s important to know what your system can handle before making the switch.

For many homes, changing the fan setting is as easy as adjusting your thermostat. But getting it right depends on your equipment and how your system is set up.

At Mechanical Extremes, we’re all about helping you get the most comfort from your HVAC system—without guesswork.
