Preparing for Warm Weather

Spring is here and we’re getting some tantalizing hints of what’s ahead.  Warm can turn hot quickly.  Is your HVAC up to the challenge?

The Mechanical Extremes team hears about it when the AC fails to measure up.  The AC runs but delivers moist, warm air, or only moderately cools air, or doesn’t function at all.

Given the complexity of HVAC systems, there could be more than one culprit.  Here’s one of them.  Less than adequate refrigerant will degrade performance.  That points to a leak, and a dilemma.  Refrigerant can be added, but is only a temporary cure.  If the leak is not repaired, then the problem will reoccur.

Bottom line?  Mechanical Extremes’ Harold Wilkes says “no system should leak and ever require topping off the refrigerant – it’s not like oil or anti-freeze in your car.”

Mechanical Extremes carefully diagnoses situations where leakage is suspected.  Refreshing the fittings could be an answer, and may be the proper solution.  But it can be different for older systems.  Because of EPA regulations, replacing refrigerant in older systems is increasingly costly.  And other deficiencies could mean investing in repairs may not pay off.  That’s when replacing the system could put you ahead.  Are there any upsides to that?  Two stand out.  The efficiency of a new system will deliver improved performance and offer utility bill relief.
